Our history
Our family generation through generation has followed producing the best txakoli with the same passion.
Our first txakoli was produced circa 1834 by our great grandfather MIGUEL AIZPURUA in small quantities but with the best quality. Besides producing the txakoli, our great grandfather used to make the metal rings for the wooden barrels, he was an expert on that field. In the ancient days the barrels where made by wooden beech, that´s why Miguel was nicknamed as Aialle (barrel ring) and the same name for the wine too.
Jazinto Aizpurua, his son, followed him at the winery, producing the txakoli and after Emeterio Aizpurua, our father, with the help of his brothers, Andoni and Josu. They left their job as fishermen´s to help at the cellar.
Nowadays, we are the fourth generation, Maria Jesus, Imanol and myself, Miren, who are following and taking care of the business with the same passion and dedication like in the beginning, offering the beste product and quality as possible
Txakoli of Getaria – Designation of Origin
Today, the geographical area of the Getariako Txakolina Designation of Origin is the province of Gipuzkoa with 402 hectares devoted to vineyards. Consisting mostly of trained vines,90% of them are located in coastal areas.
The Ondarrabi Zuri white grape variety is the main one used to produce Getaria txakolí.
As a result of the effort in terms of the revival and quality carried out together by the winegrowers and the Basque regional administration, in 1989 Getaria Txakoli was recognised as a Designation of Origin with the name Getariako Txakolina. And in 2007 the Getariako Txakolina Designation expanded its geographical area to the whole of the province of Gipuzkoa.
From its headquarters in Getaria, the Regulatory Board of the Designation of Origin makes sure that the origin of the autochthonous grapes, their careful processing and quality control, come together to offer the consumer the guarantee of GetariaTxakoli.
